How a Lullaby in a Hospital Waiting Room Took Me Back to Childhood
A quiet moment in a hospital waiting room, a mother’s lullaby, and how it unexpectedly brought back childhood memories and a sense of comfort.

It’s amazing how a lullaby can still make you sleepy, no matter how old you are.

Not because you’re tired. Not because you need rest. But because somewhere deep inside, your mind still remembers what that sound means.

The other day, I was sitting on a bench in a hospital lounge. I had accompanied my mother for a routine health check-up, and like most hospital visits, there was a fair bit of waiting involved. Hospitals have a very distinct atmosphere. They are quiet, yet filled with subtle sounds—soft footsteps echoing through corridors, muted conversations, and the occasional beep of medical machines. Everyone there seems to be waiting for something.

Beside me sat a woman holding a baby in her arms. She gently rocked the child and softly hummed a lullaby, trying to put the baby to sleep. Her voice was barely above a whisper, just a soft and steady rhythm that seemed to blend into the quietness of the room.

I was looking at my phone and jotting down a few ideas for apps and AI tools I want to build in my notes when something strange happened. I started yawning. My eyes began to feel heavy. I suddenly felt sleepy.

At first, I couldn’t understand why. I wasn’t tired. I had been focused on writing and thinking. Then it hit me—it was the lullaby.

Even though the song wasn’t meant for me, it somehow created a calmness that slowly took over the moment. The noise of the hospital faded into the background, and everything around me felt quieter, softer, slower.

Then another thought crossed my mind. That woman was probably there for someone too. Maybe a parent. Maybe a spouse. Maybe someone she cared about deeply. Just like I was there for my mother. In that waiting room, everyone carried their own worries, their own reasons for being there. Yet in the middle of it all, she was softly humming, bringing comfort to a child.

And somehow, that comfort reached me too.

That lullaby didn’t just make me sleepy—it took me back. Back to childhood nights when sleep came easily, when someone singing nearby meant safety, warmth, and peace. A time when the world felt smaller, simpler, and a lot less complicated than it does now.

It’s interesting how certain things stay with us. A sound, a feeling, a melody. A lullaby isn’t just a song for babies. Somewhere deep in our minds, it remains a signal of comfort—a quiet reminder that everything is okay, that you can rest.

And maybe that’s why, no matter how grown up we become, a lullaby still works.

Some comforts don’t fade with age. They just wait quietly for the right moment to find you again.
